Gary Cowell first opened his converted eight service bay dealership on December 1, 1967. He had four employees, and within the first month had sold 2 new and 1 pre-owned vehicles. By 1972 Cowell Volkswagen had outgrown their original space, resulting Gary in purchasing the property next door – building a brand new location that housed not only Volkswagen but also Audi and Porsche vehicles.Without a doubt, Cowell Auto Group is an industry leader. They were one of the first dealerships to relocate to the Richmond Auto Mall – as Gary Cowell was one of the founders in 1985. Today, the Cowell family not only owns Cowell Volkswagen but also owns Audi Richmond, Jaguar Richmond, and Land Rover of Richmond. All dealerships are located in the Richmond Auto Mall, employing over 300 people.
